Retainers
Retainers hold teeth straight after treatment
ALL teeth moved orthodontically initially want to return to their original position. This is because little fibres in your gums (like stretched springs) stay stretched for 3 years (until they finally remodel).
Teeth also become more crowded with age. This natural ageing process is caused by the narrowing of the dental ashes with age. For this reason we always recommend retainers are used for life .
There are 2 varieties of retainers. We sometimes use both at once.
- removable retainers
- Fixed retainers
Removable Essix Retainers
These are normally worn just at night following the removal of braces.
Sometimes after a period you can reduce the number of these nights these are worn.
If you clench/grind your teeth we advise you wear them every night to help protect your teeth from tooth wear and cracking.
We never advise patients to stop wearing retainers as teeth can start to move again at any age.
Replacing a single lost or broken removable retainer costs from £80
Fixed Retainers (private only)
These are very flexible metal wires bonded behind the front teeth only.
They prevent the return of specific orthodontic conditions such as:
- severe twists
- large gaps.
A clear removable retainer is needed in addition to this fixed retainer as a ‘belts & braces’ approach.
We always include these within the cost of Private Treatment.
Ideally, fixed retainers should stay on for at a minimum of 3 years.
Replacing a lost /broken Fixed Retainer usually costs £60-£180.
(We recommend you need to see a hygienist every 6 months, and that you use interdental brushes to clean under it)
